As someone who is finally making time to commit to sharing my writing regularly I appreciated reading these words of insight from other writers. Thank you for posting the question and celebrating a variety of responses!
Thanks Erin, I created this free substack just to celebrate writing and I am glad this one helped. Pls do stay tuned here. Always looking for ways to collaborate.
Such a helpful post with encouraging and actionable advice for newer writers. I particularly enjoyed this quote: 'You don’t have to get it right first time. Your voice will develop. Take the pressure off yourself and do what comes naturally. Then revise like crazy.' I recently fell into the trap of writing and publishing without much revising, as I thought this was what all the best Substack-ers were doing. But it just didn't feel like me. Following a prompt from the In Haste podcast, I went back to revising 'like crazy', letting things sit for a while before hitting publish, and I feel so much happier with what I'm putting out now.
Yes, a bit sneaky of me but I didn't want all that good response to be lost in my DM's and chats. The purpose of this substack is to create a vault of content that we can look back years from now and find it.
That piece on writing for yourself is so important… it goes with one of the best pieces of advice I’ve gotten about writing: lean into your obsessions. I think writing is more fun the more I feel it’s an itch I can’t stop scratching. If you’re leaning into yourself with heart (and some craft), others will follow.
Love this advice! Some that has been resonating with me recently ~ write what only you can ~ and then also ~ you are not the main character ~
So maybe they seem contradictory but somehow make sense. I’m not here writing like anyone else, I’m sharing my life and my experiences, but I’m also trying to make it not so self important….

Yes, revising is a discipline that we don’t give time to due to our hastiness to publish. Such good advice indeed. Thanks for reading and sharing.
Raj, now I understand why you were data gathering in Notes last week. It was all for this post!
Interesting how everyone's responses were so different. Thank you for putting this together 😊

It's a great idea to use Notes to gather information for future posts. Good job!!

Love the way you put it, and writing for myself was a difficult journey for me. I had to gradually get comfortable with it.

Agreed, it's so easy to get lost in "it's all about me" mentality but having the reader in mind at all times is a good habit to cultivate.
So much great advice, thanks for sharing!
What a pleasure to be included here Raj! Thank you for your time and care.
Thanks Raj. Very sage.
Good advice for writers
